NUSNA Activities for November 2011

1. On Monday, Oct 24th the NU-SNA sponsored a blood drive with the San Diego Blood Bank. The students contacted the SD Blood Bank, took charge of publicity and coordinated with NU-Facilities personnel to make this happen. Also, the majority of donations came from the nursing students ! By the end of the day, 37 units of blood were collected, exceeding the goal that was originally set. According to the SD Blood Band rep, this equates to saving 74 lives ! The SD Blood Bank was so impressed that they have asked the NU-SNA to plan to work with them again in the spring, and this time they are setting the goal even higher!

2. On November 12th, several of the nursing students from the NU-SNA will be volunteering at the 17th Annual “Taking Control of Your Diabetes Conference and Health Fair”. This conference is put on by local healthcare professionals that focus on the care of diabetics. It is for members of the general public who are living with diabetes The emphasis is to give people an edge on the information and empowerment they need to live well with diabetes. The students nurses will be involved in many activities; ranging from helping with registration to assisting other professionals to complete health screening and providing participants with education about managing their disease.

SHHS Student Research Fellowship

The National University Library launched a pilot project through the Center of Excellence that created an opportunity for the librarians to host student research fellows. Hi, my name is Sarah and I was hired as the first ever Student Research Fellow.  It has been one of the best experiences I've ever had because I have learned so much and have been given opportunities that have provided me a competitive edge moving forward into my career path.  This experience allowed me to work directly with faculty to do research and submit a manuscript for publishing.  Also, I was able to apply my new research skills in all the classes I took while I was a fellow, resulting in straight A's in all of my courses.  My time, here at the library, is coming to an end as I am getting ready to ship out for Army basic training but I will carry this experience with me forever. Below is a video about my experience here at the National University Library as a fellow. If you are interested in be
